the work of
howard mccurry

Picture
“People have told me stories about what was happening that day when they ran into him (McCurry). And he would make jokes about whatever was ever going on,” said MACA Director Susan Pyatt Baker

McCurry, who passed in 1999, left a long-lasting legacy of artworks depicting life and landscapes of McDowell County circa 1920. He was also famously known in the area for his cartoon drawings of Scruffy the Dog that were often drawn on napkins with pen and given as gifts to his friends or strangers.

His cartoons were featured in The McDowell News and The McDowell Express during the 1980s. Many of his paintings can be viewed at local businesses and banks in McDowell. McCurry was a member of the Lions Club and integral in building Blue Ridge Terrace Apartments. Sept. 12 is also Howard McCurry Day proclaimed by former mayor Everette Clark in 1996.
